High protein, healthy recipes using affordable, local South African ingredients to protect lean mass and support your GLP-1 weight loss journey.
15-Minute High Protein Beef Stir-Fry
After a long workday, standing over a stove for an hour is the last thing anyone wants to do – especially when your appetite is low on a GLP-1 journey and cooking feels like a chore. Standard takeaway stir-fries are notoriously greasy and drenched in sugary syrups, while many online recipes demand endless vegetable chopping or specialty Asian sauces you can’t easily find at your local store.
his 15-Minute Beef Stir-Fry is designed for real life:
- The Weeknight Shortcut: Using a bag of Hawaiian Stir Fry straight from the freezer eliminates all prep time. The flash-cooked carrots, broccoli, and peppers keep a crisp, vibrant texture, while the natural sweetness of pineapple pairs deliciously with savoury beef.
- The 3-Ingredient Glossy Glaze: No complicated bottles needed. A quick whisk of pantry-staple soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce, and a touch of cornflour creates a luscious, restaurant-quality glaze that coats every strip of steak.
- One Meal for Everyone: It delivers clean, low-volume protein that won’t sit heavily in your stomach. Serve your portion as-is or over a bed of cauliflower rice, and dish up the rest of the pan over instant noodles or jasmine rice for your partner and kids!
- Digestion Benefit: Pineapple contains natural enzymes (bromelain) that assist your body in breaking down proteins, making it an excellent, gentle digestive aid when a GLP-1 medication has slowed down your stomach emptying.
Local Swaps & Quick Tips
- The Beef: Checkers Simple Truth or standard supermarket quick-fry beef strips cook in just 3 to 4 minutes. If you want an even cheaper weeknight alternative, swap the beef strips 1:1 with extra-lean beef mince or sliced chicken breast.
- High Heat is Key: Make sure your frying pan or wok is smoking hot before adding the beef so it browns fast without stewing in its own juices.
- Carb Customisation: Keep it lower carb and GLP-1 friendly by pairing it with steamed cauliflower rice or shredded cabbage, or bulk it up with rice noodles for hungry family members.

Ingredients
- 500 g beef strips, rump, sirloin, or quick-fry beef strips
- ½ bag Hawaiian Stir Fry Mix, cooked straight from frozen (approx. 350g–500g)
- 15 ml cooking oil, sunflower, canola, or sesame oil (1tbsp)
- 1 tsp garlic paste, or 2 crushed garlic cloves
- 1 tsp ginger paste, or finely grated fresh ginger
- salt and black pepper, to taste
For the 3-Ingredient Quick Sauce:
- 60 ml soy sauce, ¼ cup
- 30 ml sweet chilli sauce (2 tbsp), or 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 15 ml cornflour (1 tbsp), dissolved in 2 tbsp water (to thicken the sauce)
Instructions
- Prep the Sauce: In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce, and the dissolved cornflour water mix. Set aside.
- Flash-Fry the Beef: Heat your wok or a large frying pan over high heat until it is smoking hot, then add the oil. Add the beef strips, seasoning lightly with salt and black pepper. Fry for 3 to 4minutes until browned but still tender. Remove the beef from the pan and set it aside on a plate.
- Cook the Aromatics & Veggies: In the same hot pan, quickly toss in the garlic and ginger paste for 30 seconds until fragrant. Immediately dump in the frozen Hawaiian Stir Fry. Stir-fry over high heat for 4 to 5 minutes. Do not overcook them; you want the carrots and broccoli to keep a good crunch.
- Combine and Sauce: Lower the heat to medium. Return the cooked beef strips and any juices on the plate back into the pan with the vegetables.
- Thicken: Give your sauce mixture a quick stir and pour it over the beef and vegetables. Toss continuously for 1 to 2 minutes. The sauce will turn glossy and thicken up, beautifully coating the pineapple and beef strips.
- Serve: Remove from heat and serve hot over steamed jasmine rice or instant noodles.
