High protein, healthy recipes using affordable, local South African ingredients to protect lean mass and support your GLP-1 weight loss journey.
Rich Restaurant Flavour Without the Digestive Distress
Butter chicken is the ultimate South African comfort takeaway. But if you’re on a GLP-1 medication (like Ozempic or Mounjaro) or recovering from bariatric surgery, traditional restaurant curries can be a minefield. Loaded with 50g+ of melted butter and pools of heavy dairy cream, they often cause severe acid reflux, nausea, or delayed-gastric-emptying heaviness that ruins your entire evening.
This 20-Minute High-Protein Butter Chicken completely flips the script:
- The Ultimate Local Protein Hack: We replace the traditional heavy butter and cream with blended smooth low-fat cottage cheese. It melts into a velvety, glossy, restaurant-style gravy with zero curds and zero sour aftertaste.
- Huge Protein Density: Delivering an incredible 35g of muscle-protecting protein per portion, keeping your hair, energy, and muscle mass thriving while eating in a calorie deficit.
- One Meal for the Whole Household: You never have to cook a separate “diet meal” for yourself. Your portion is served over a modest scoop of basmati rice, while your kids and partner can ladle it over big bowls of rice with warm rotis or our 2-Ingredient Protein Naan Bread.
- Freezer-Friendly Meal Prep: This curry freezes exceptionally well. Portion any left-overs into an airtight glass container; reheat gently on the stovetop or in the microwave at 50% power with a splash of water to keep the sauce smooth and velvety.

Ingredients
- 500 g chicken breast fillets, cut into bite-sized chunks
- 1 packet Butter Chicken Dry Cook-In Sauce (50g)
- 150 g low-fat cottage cheese (~½ to ⅔ cup)
- 1 tsp olive oil or cooking spray, just enough to brown the chicken
- 1 small brown onion, finely chopped
- 1 tsp minced garlic & ginger paste
- 1 to 2 tbsp tomato paste, deepens colour and rich tomato tang
- 300 ml cold water, slightly less than the packet calls for to account for the rich cottage cheese body
Instructions
- Brown the Chicken & Aromatics: Heat 1 teaspoon of oil in a wide frying pan over medium-high heat. Add your chopped onion and chicken breast chunks. Cook for 4 to 5 minutes until the chicken is sealed and lightly golden. Stir in the garlic-ginger paste and tomato paste, stirring for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Simmer the Spiced Gravy: In a measuring jug, whisk the Butter Chicken dry sauce packet into 300ml cold water until smooth. Pour into the pan with the chicken. Bring to a gentle simmer, reduce heat to low-medium, and let it bubble uncovered for 8 minutes until the chicken is tender and the sauce has thickened slightly.
- The Cottage Cheese Tempering Secret: Blitz your 150g cottage cheese in a NutriBullet or stick blender with 2 tablespoons of water until completely silky and liquid.Turn the stove heat down to very low. Ladle two spoonfuls of the warm pan gravy into your blended cottage cheese and stir to bring it up to temperature. Pour the mixture back into the skillet and gently stir.
- Warm & Serve: Let the sauce warm through on low for 1 to 2 minutes without boiling. Watch it instantly transform into a luxurious, creamy, golden-orange curry! Spoon over steamed basmati rice and garnish with fresh coriander.
⚠️ Chef's Rule: Never pour cold cottage cheese straight into a vigorously boiling pan, or the dairy proteins will split into white flecks.
