High Protein “Boerewors” Bolognaise

South African Comfort Food Without the Heavy Crash

Few aromas trigger instant comfort in a South African home quite like the earthy, roasted coriander, fragrant clove, and cracked black pepper of a traditional boerewors braai. But classic boerewors is notorious for its high pork and beef fat content – often packing more grease than protein. When your gastric emptying is slowed down on a GLP-1 medication like Ozempic or Mounjaro, that heavy fat layer can sit like lead in your stomach, triggering severe nausea, reflux, and sluggish food fatigue.

This “Boerewors” Bolognaise gives you the best of both worlds.

By rubbing a custom boerewors spice blend directly into extra-lean beef mince (less than 5% fat) from Checkers Simple Truth or Pick n Pay, we capture that nostalgic, smoky braai flavour while keeping the fat footprint low. We then bulk out the rich ragù with finely diced peppers, aromatics, and grated sweet carrots, simmering everything in a quick Knorr Tomato Base sauce.

The result? A deeply savoury, thick meat sauce that packs over 30g of lean, muscle-protecting protein into every single plate.

Best of all, this is a genuine one-meal-for-the-whole-family dinner. Your partner and kids can pile theirs high over regular spaghetti or penne, while you can enjoy yours over a controlled portion of high-protein pasta, zucchini ribbons, or a baked jacket potato. No cooking separate meals, no specialty overseas ingredients, and coming in at well under R50 a portion!

Why You’ll Love This

  • Gentle Digestion Serving Base: If standard pasta feels too heavy or expands uncomfortably in your stomach, ladle this boerewors bolognaise over steamed zucchini noodles, a small baked sweet potato, or a scoop of fluffy polenta/pap.
  • Meal Prep Freezer Friendly: This sauce freezes exceptionally well for up to 3 months. Make a double batch on Sunday, freeze it in individual silicone meal-prep containers, and pull out a 32g protein dinner whenever weeknight client meetings run late!

Ingredients

  • 500 g extra-lean beef mince
  • 1 ½ tbsp Boerewors spice blend, or a mix of ground coriander, cloves, black pepper, and nutmeg
  • 1 red onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
  • 1 green pepper, chopped
  • 1 red pepper, chopped
  • 2 carrots, grated
  • 125 ml basil leaves (½ cup), roughly chopped
  • 5 ml Robertsons oregano, 1 tbsp
  • 5 ml Robertsons chilli flakes, 1 tbsp
  • 250 ml water, 1 cup
  • 48 g Knorr Tomato Base Dry Cook-In-Sauce, 1 packet
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  • Prep the Meat: In a small bowl, thoroughly mix the extra-lean beef mince with your boerewors spice blend until the spices are evenly distributed.
  • Sauté the Veggies: Lightly coat a medium non-stick frying pan with cooking spray over medium heat. Sauté the chopped onion, garlic, green pepper, and red pepper for 4 to 5 minutes until soft.
  • Brown the Mince: Add the spiced mince to the pan. Use a wooden spoon to break it apart into fine pieces. Cook for about 5 minutes until completely browned.
  • Add the Carrots & Spices: Stir in the grated carrot, dried oregano, and chilli flakes. Cook for another 2 minutes.
  • Simmer the Tomato Base: In a measuring jug, whisk the packet of Knorr Tomato Base Cook-In-Sauce into 250 ml of water. Pour it directly into the pan. Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer.
  • Thicken and Finish: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let it simmer for 10 minutes until the veggies are tender and the sauce has thickened nicely. Stir in the fresh basil just before serving.
