High Protein Creamy Cottage Cheese Mash

Creamy Comfort Food, Without the Heavy Gastric Load

Few side dishes are as universally comforting on a South African dinner table as a warm, fluffy mound of mashed potatoes. But classic restaurant-style mash is typically laden with heavy cream, full-fat milk, and half a block of butter. When your gastric motility is slowed down on a GLP-1 medication, that heavy fat layer can trigger severe reflux, nausea, and intense fullness after just two bites.

This High-Protein Cottage Cheese Mashed Potatoes recipe is our favourite local kitchen cheat-code!

By blending Plain Smooth Low-Fat Cottage Cheese with roasted garlic and a splash of low-fat milk before folding it through hot, boiled potatoes, you achieve that ultra-silky, buttery texture without pouring in cups of heavy cream. The cottage cheese melts seamlessly into the starch, adding a subtle tang (resembling crème fraîche or sour cream) while sneaking in almost 10g of complete, muscle-protecting protein per serving.

Best of all, it is a true one-pot winner for the whole family. Your partner and children will happily ladle it beside their roasts, braais, or stews without ever suspecting there’s a stealth tub of cottage cheese hidden inside. At less than R10 a portion, it’s an effortless, budget-friendly staple for your weekly dinner rotation!

Why It Fits the Mzansi Lekker & Lean Plate
  • Zero Graininess or Curds: Blending smooth cottage cheese before folding it into the hot potatoes ensures a velvety, lump-free texture that glides down easily on a blunted appetite.
  • Prebiotic & Satiety Power: Potatoes are naturally high on the satiety index and provide clean, steady complex carbs to fuel active days and weekend hiking trails, while keeping overall fat low to protect your digestion.
  • Everyday Local Pantry: Made with standard South African russet/floury potatoes, Ina Paarman seasonings, and fridge staples from Checkers, Pick n Pay, or Woolies.

Ingredients

  • 600 g Boiling/Cooking Potatoes, peeled and cut into uniform chunks
  • 1 tub low-fat cottage cheese (250g)
  • 1 tbsp Salted butter (15g), or 1 tsp garlic-infused olive oil
  • 2 tbsp Low-Fat Milk (30ml), only if needed to adjust looseness
  • 1 clove Garlic, minced or grated (optional, for a roasted garlic note)
  • ½ tsp Fine Salt & White Pepper, to taste
  • Garnish: 1 tbsp finely snipped fresh chives or flat-leaf parsley

Instructions

  • Boil the Potatoes: Place the peeled, cubed potatoes into a medium pot of well-salted cold water. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat and cook for 12 to 15 minutes, or until completely fork-tender. Drain thoroughly and return them to the warm, dry pot for 1 minute to allow excess moisture to evaporate.
  • Whip the Cottage Cheese (The Silky Texture Trick): If using chunky cottage cheese - while the potatoes are hot, add the smooth cottage cheese, butter, minced garlic, salt, and white pepper to a small blender cup or bullet blender, blending for 15 seconds until completely silky and velvety.
  • Tip: If you don't want to dirty a blender, use smooth cottage cheese and simply mash it straight into the hot potatoes with a potato masher or hand whisk until smooth.
  • Mash & Fold: Roughly mash the drained potatoes with a handheld masher. Pour in the whipped warm cottage cheese mixture and fold together using a silicone spatula or wooden spoon until light, creamy, and uniform. Add a splash of milk only if you prefer a looser consistency.
  • Serve: Spoon into a warm serving bowl, top with a crack of black pepper and finely snipped chives, and serve immediately alongside your garlic butter steak bites.
