High protein, healthy recipes using affordable, local South African ingredients to protect lean mass and support your GLP-1 weight loss journey.
When you are on a GLP-1 journey or watching your protein goals, red meat can sometimes feel intimidating: full-sized steaks take effort to pan-sear, leave greasy splatters across the stovetop, and can easily turn tough or heavy on a sensitive stomach.
These Air Fryer Garlic Butter Steak Bites are the ultimate weeknight solution:
- Tender in 5 Minutes: By cubing tenderised rump or sirloin into bite-sized pieces and blasting them at 200°C, the meat develops a savoury browned crust on the outside while staying tender and juicy in the centre.
- Low-Volume, High-Density Fuel: You get ~37g of bioavailable protein in a small, manageable plate portion that won’t trigger nausea or early-fullness discomfort.
- Everyday Supermarket Cuts: No need for expensive fillet cuts; a pack of well-trimmed rump steak from Checkers, Pick n Pay, or Woolies works.
- The High-Protein Pairing: Tossed in garlic-herb butter, these bites pair perfectly with our Creamy High-Protein Cottage Cheese Mash! Scooping the steak juices into the mash gives you a complete, comforting meal packing over 46g of protein without heavy creams or restaurant calorie bombs.
Local Swaps & Quick Tips
- Don’t Overcrowd: If your air fryer basket is compact, cook the steak bites in two quick batches so they brown instead of steaming in their own juices.
- Meat Cut: Rump is the most cost-effective cut, but tenderised sirloin or ostrich steak cubes also work.
- Meal Prep: Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the air fryer at 160°C for 2 minutes to keep the steak tender.
